There are many different visa categories that people from outside of the European Economic Area can apply for in order to gain entry into the UK. Different visas take different lengths of time to process for a range of reasons, including:
- Because some categories require more evidence to be submitted,
- Because the cases of people who apply for certain categories tend to be more complex and their intricate details have to be assessed,
- Or simply because of how many applications the Home Office typically receives in that specific category
Although it may be frustrating having to wait for a response about your visa application, however the Home Office do their best to stick within the time frames that they state for each category so that as few people as possible are left waiting for too long.
Is there a standard UK visa processing time?
No, there is not one standard UK visa processing time, however there are specific time frames in which the Home Office state they will provide a decision for each visa category. The list below displays the time frames given by the Home Office for each visa type:
Temporary visas for spouses, workers, entrepreneurs or students: up to 8 weeks
All other initial entry visas applied for from outside the UK: 3 – 12 weeks
Settlement visas applied for from outside the UK: 12 – 24 weeks
Indefinite leave to remain applications applied for from inside the UK: up to 6 months
If your case is more complex or unusual than a regular case, it could take longer than the times listed above. The Home Office might not make you aware of this, so it might be a good idea to contact an immigration solicitor so you can be sure.
What happens when you submit a visa application?
When you submit a visa application, you will receive confirmation that it has been received. You will also be invited to book an appointment at a nearby visa application centre. When you’re there, you’ll have to provide your biometric information and submit documents which prove that you are eligible for the visa you have applied for.
When they have made their decision, you will receive a letter from the UK Home Office with your result in it. The letter will also explain what the next steps you should take are. If you have been successful, you’ll be given a sticker (called a vignette) to put in your passport. The sticker will state the dates the visa is valid to and from, as well as stating any conditions of your leave in the UK.
Home Office visa conditions and what they mean
Most UK visas have conditions attached to them, which are essentially restrictions that apply to you whilst you are in the UK. Some examples of these conditions include:
